Participation

This year's OT Week theme is participation, and I think it's a beautiful reminder of just how much participation shapes our everyday lives.

Because participation truly is everything.

It's buying a coffee, doing the grocery shopping, playing an online game, having a conversation with a friend, spending time with family, or simply existing within a community. It's the big things, the little things, and all the seemingly insignificant moments in between.

Participation is how we connect, how we experience the world around us, how we express ourselves, and how we find meaning in our lives.

And perhaps more importantly, participation doesn't have to look a certain way to be meaningful. It doesn't have to be inherently productive, socially conventional, independent, or even visible to others. For one person, participation might mean attending a community event surrounded by people. For another, it might mean connecting with a friend through an online game from the comfort of their bedroom. Neither is more meaningful than the other.

As Occupational Therapists, we have the privilege of supporting people to engage with the world in ways that are meaningful to them, rather than ways that society tells us they should. Because participation isn't simply about what we do. It's about belonging, connection, choice, identity, and having the opportunity to experience life on our own terms.

Participation is to be.

And everyone deserves the opportunity to participate in a way that is meaningful to them.

Happy OT Week everyone
